The Assassin Snail is a carnivorous species of small freshwater whelk commonly found in tropical aquarium setups. It typically preys on carrion, worms, and other gastropods in its natural habitat. This snail is notably active, often traversing its environment in search of sustenance. During periods of rest, it tends to bury itself within the sandy substrate, leaving only its sensitive proboscis, resembling a “snorkel,” exposed. Upon detecting movement of potential food sources, it swiftly becomes active.
In aquarium settings, the Assassin Snail serves as a natural control for “pest” snails like pond snails and Malaysian trumpet/live-bearing snails, which can proliferate rapidly if unchecked. While they do reproduce within aquariums, their population growth is typically manageable. Visually, Assassin Snails are striking, featuring ribbed conical yellow shells adorned with dark brown spirals, complemented by a greyish-green body.
Maintaining good water quality, preferably with a decent current, and providing a soft sand substrate for burrowing are essential for the well-being of Assassin Snails. While larger ornamental snails are generally safe from predation, small juveniles may fall prey to them. While there are occasional reports of Assassin Snails attacking small shrimp, this behaviour is less common in well-fed specimens. Aquatic plants are typically unharmed by these carnivores. They are sometimes marketed under the name “Snail-Eating Snail.”
When feeding Assassin Snails, offer a varied diet of meaty foods, including small snails, bloodworms, white mosquito larvae, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp and Mysis, as well as sinking catfish pellets or granules.
